Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Edward and Mary Davies House in the National Register of Historic Places on June 6, 2023.
The Edward and Mary Davies House was erected as the primary residence for Welsh-born blacksmith Edward Davies and his family. Constructed in 1864, it exhibits a gabled-ell vernacular form that incorporates Greek Revival style elements that were popular in Wisconsin at the time. In more than 150 years, the Davies House displays few exterior and interior alterations. Presently, it is one of the most intact mid-nineteenth-century vernacular brick houses remaining in Platteville today.
The building is characterized by locally sourced red brick, a fieldstone foundation, and textured stone window sills and lintels. Character defining features representative of the Greek Revival style include the overall proportions and massing that reflect the “gable front and wing” subtype of the style, balanced composition visible on the primary façade, square wood columns supporting the front porch, and incorporation of Classically-inspired window and door surrounds in the interior. Although modest in size and style, the Edward and Mary Davies House is significant as one of Platteville’s oldest and most intact brick residences.
