Milwaukee, WI – (December 2, 2013) – The Water Council and the Milwaukee Institute are pleased to announce a partnership designed to accelerate water-based product development and research utilizing Wisconsin’s very own high performance computing and storage resources.

The Institute’s Executive Director, Jay Bayne stated “The Institute is delighted to partner with and assist Water Council member companies and Global Water Center tenants in their activities requiring applied computational science. The Institute’s high performance computing resources are especially useful for modeling, simulation, visualization and analytics in water research areas such as computational biology, fluid dynamics and finite element analysis.

Under the agreement, the Milwaukee Institute will be offering its considerable high performance computational systems and services to Global Water Center (GWC) tenants, including technical consulting in computational biology and fluid dynamics applications requiring access to ANSYS and other selected open source tools.

The Milwaukee Institute’s HPC cluster is the largest publicly accessible resource of its kind in Wisconsin and allows users the ability to simulate, model, and visualize complex applications used in product development, engineering, research and other projects. The Institute recently completed its commissioning of a major expansion to their HPC infrastructure.

“Our relationship with the Milwaukee Institute will accelerate product development and innovation activity here at the Global Water Center,” said Dean Amhaus, president and CEO of The Water Council. Amhaus added; “The Center’s tenants will now be able to easily run software simulations of products, or ground breaking research thus shorting the time from new idea, to commercial offering. Access to innovate technology tools and thought processes is precisely what collaboration at the Global Water Center is all about.”

The GWC opened in September and is home to some of the Midwest’s premiere manufacturing and water-based companies. A. O. Smith Corporation will be the first GWC tenant to take advantage of the Institute’s HPC infrastructure and services. Other companies are currently in discussions to augment their product development and design processes utilizing the Institute’s resources.
“ANSYS sees great value in working with the Milwaukee Institute and The Water Council to support water resource management initiatives,” said Barbara Hutchings, Director of Strategic partnerships at ANSYS. “This collaboration is closely aligned with our focus on bringing simulation and high-performance computing tools to both expert analysts, and non-expert new users and looks forward to being part of this exciting overall effort.”

About The Water Council
The Water Council, the only organization of its kind in the United States, was established in 2009 by Milwaukee-area businesses, education and government leaders. With more than 150 water technology companies in the Milwaukee area, the region’s water industry is a $10.5 billion dollar market and accounts for four percent of the world’s total water business. The non-profit organization is linking together global water technology companies, innovative water entrepreneurs, acclaimed academic research programs and, most importantly, some of the nation’s brightest and most energetic professionals. The Water Council is capturing the attention of the world and transforming the Milwaukee region into a World Water Hub for freshwater research, economic development and education. The Water Council is located in the Global Water Center at 247 W. Freshwater Way, Suite 500, Milwaukee, WI 53204. About Milwaukee Institute
Founded in 2007, the Milwaukee Institute is a non-profit computational research center dedicated to promoting and providing a regional technical computing cyber-infrastructure that encourages and enables innovation within and among academic and commercial organizations. Its high performance computing, storage and networking environment is Southeast Wisconsin’s only publically accessible supercomputing resource. Members of the Institute have access to modeling, simulation and visualization tools for development of new products and services, for exploration and discovery using computational science, and in analyzing very large datasets.

The Institute supports research and development projects among cooperation organizations and across multiple disciples that seek solutions to “grand challenge” problems ins such divers fields as health care, energy production and distribution, advanced manufacturing, financial services, economics and natural resource management. The Milwaukee Institute is headquartered at 411 E. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 1280, Milwaukee, WI 53202. For more information, visit www.mkei.org or contact info@mkei.org; 414-727-6424.
