MADISON- A UW Carbone Cancer Center research team looking for an individualized way to treat women with breast cancer has been awarded nearly $500,000 to continue their research.
The Wisconsin Partnership Program has awarded Dr. Lee Wilke, Dr. Mark Burkard and Dr. David Beebe the grant over three years to develop a device to individualize drug therapy for breast cancer patients.
“Current cancer treatments remain unfocused and broadly directed,” said Dr. Wilke, a surgeon and head of the UW Health Breast Center. “Our team is developing a tool to quickly assess drug efficacy in individual patients and to improve patient outcomes.”
Wilke said that the research collaboration includes engineering, medical oncology and surgery.
Since 2004, the Wisconsin Partnership Education and Research Committee has awarded more than $43 million in grants for projects that improve the health and well-being of Wisconsin residents.
