Edgewater Generating Station SCR system internationally recognized for engineering excellence

MADISON, Wis. – October 24, 2013 – A recently completed emission control project at Alliant Energy’s Edgewater Generating Station Unit 5 (Edgewater 5) in Sheboygan, Wis. has garnered international recognition for its engineering excellence. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system installed on Edgewater 5 has been named a finalist for premier project of the year by Platt’s as part of its 2013 Global Energy Awards.

“Edgewater 5 SCR’s successful project execution has made it one of the best performing SCR’s in the electric utility industry,” said John Larsen, Alliant Energy’s Senior Vice President of Generation. “We are pleased that our employees’, and our engineering and construction partners’ hard work on the project is being recognized and it’s an honor that Platts named the project a finalist for its Global Energy Awards.”

In an SCR system, ammonia is injected into the stream of gases leaving the boiler and converts the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into nitrogen and water that will not react in the atmosphere to create smog. Several layers of catalyst within the SCR enhance this conversion. The Edgewater 5 SCR construction began in September 2010 and the project was finished at the end of last year. With its completion, the SCR is now removing approximately 75% of NOx emissions from the generating unit.

The Platts’ recognition specifically came from the Edgewater 5 SCR project team’s engineering and design efforts to identify, address and preserve the operating range of a power plant that has been retrofitted with an SCR for NOx control. Historically, power plants retrofitted with SCR’s have had to give up significant operational flexibility with the addition of an SCR. Due to the structured engineering approach in which the team addressed potential limiting factors during the design phase of the project, the project team was able to sustain the unit’s capability to operate across virtually the entire load range and still achieve the NOx removal benefits of an SCR.

Alliant Energy’s Edgewater 5 SCR engineering project is one of eight projects named as a finalist in the Premier Projects Category – Engineering. The award winners of the 15th annual Platt’s Global Energy Awards will be named and honored at an event on December 12 in New York City. More than 500 energy industry executives are expected to attend the recognition dinner.

Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars” of the energy industry, the Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 19 categories spanning the entire energy complex. Platt’s receives more than 200 nominations each year for the Global Energy Awards and nominations have come from more than 25 countries including Brazil, India, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Russia, Switzerland, Argentina, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, United Kingdom and the United States. Founded in 1909, Platts is a leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals and metals information.
