The Student Designed Classroom

(Appleton, WI) What would a 21st century classroom look like if the students were the ones to design it? Hoffman LLC senior project architect Mike Borski and senior project designer Catherine Cruickshank will present “Tapping the Source – Students Shape 21st Century Environments” during the 2012 Wisconsin State Education Convention being held in Milwaukee, January 18th – 20th. Borski and Cruickshank, who have extensive experience in the design, renovation, and new construction of educational facilities, will co-present with nationally recognized education consultant James Lewicki, design instructor and coordinator Renee Ulman from the Appleton Career Academy, and Whitney Shapiro and Carli Ann Holso, two of the students who contributed to the project.

“The goal of the project was to have students examine various, continually evolving approaches to 21st century learning and offer suggestions to enhance learning environments for future generations,” Borski stated. “Our discussion of the project and the outcomes will highlight ways school board members and district administrators can incorporate 21st century learning ideas into a new or existing school facility.”

Cruickshank says you don’t have to start with a blank slate to create an effective space for learning. “In these tight economic times, it’s been shown that many successful 21st century learning environments can be a result of renovation instead of new construction,” Cruickshank stated.

Hoffman has worked with more than 55 public school districts, private schools and charter schools throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois and is an industry leader in sustainable design and construction. Hoffman recently completed the Kornerstone Charter School building for the Kimberly Area School District. “In this case, we renovated the district’s former administrative building to meet the learning needs of the Charter school,” Borski stated. “It’s a great example of how an effective learning environment can be created within an existing space.”

The Wisconsin State Education Convention brings together hundreds of school leaders each year to foster effective school board practices for student success through workshops and other education programs.
