WED Healthcare Report: Crowley calls for constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights

— Dem gubernatorial candidate David Crowley is calling for lawmakers to OK a constitutional amendment that would protect the right to an abortion.

Crowley yesterday called for an amendment that would create a right to carry out decisions on things like contraception, fertility treatment, pregnancy, care after a miscarriage and an abortion.

As part of his announcement, Crowley slammed three billionaires for trying to “buy this election for MAGA Extremist Congressman Tom Tiffany who is an anti-abortion extremist and who backed a nationwide abortion ban at zero weeks with no exceptions for rape, incest or life of the mother. We can’t let him near the governor’s office.”

The proposal comes as Dems have sought to highlight Tiffany’s support in Congress of legislation that would make it a crime to perform an abortion except during the earliest weeks of pregnancy. It included an exception to save the life of the mother, but not for rape or incest.

Crowley’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a question on whether the proposed amendment would negate current Wisconsin laws that bar abortions after 20 weeks or require a 24-hour waiting period before obtaining one.

Tiffany said in a statement he backs Wisconsin’s current ban at 20 weeks, which he voted for while in the state Legislature, and slammed Crowley for voting against a bill requiring medical care for a baby who survives an abortion attempt.

“I will uphold Wisconsin’s current law,” Tiffany said. “David Crowley will take Wisconsin from where we are today to one of the most extreme abortion policies in the country.”

Both houses of the Legislature have to sign off on proposed amendments in back-to-back legislative sessions before they can go to voters for a referendum.

The proposed amendment Crowley called for would include provisions to prevent the state from penalizing someone for seeking healthcare or helping another person seek care.
