U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: Provides port navigation update

Explains Options to Port Operators and Stakeholders

(Green Bay, Wis.) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a stakeholder meeting to provide an update on the current high water flow levels and water flow velocity on the Fox River. The Corps explained to the Port, its terminal and vessel operators, and other stakeholders options regarding expected ranges when flows at Green Bay may reach the necessary threshold enabling safe navigation for vessels to dock. Unfortunately, based on current modeling, even the best of those options would not have the Port open until May 15, 2026, at the earliest.

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach thanks the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for making this special meeting available to all stakeholders impacted by these unfortunate events.

These high water flow levels result from recent heavy rainfalls, along with the significant snow accumulation we experienced last winter, both of which affect the 6,600 square mile Fox-Wolf watershed. Due to these conditions, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has opened the dam gates to release water from Lake Winnebago, creating these abnormally fast water flows on the Fox River, leading most terminal operators to conclude that the Port is not currently navigable for ships to dock.

This situation could not occur at a worse time, as stockpiles of goods are typically low in the spring and require replenishing.
