Port of Green Bay: Encourages safe boating practices ahead of Memorial Day weekend

(Green Bay, Wis.) – As Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the boating season, the Port of Green Bay is reminding recreational boaters to prioritize safety while enjoying local waterways, especially in areas shared with large commercial vessels.

With increased traffic on the water during the holiday weekend, it is critical for boaters to remain alert and understand how to safely navigate around working shipping channels. Commercial ships operating in the Port of Green Bay are significantly larger, less maneuverable and always have the right of way. Boaters are urged to give these vessels plenty of space, as their size and limited visibility make it difficult to stop or change course quickly.

In addition to maintaining a safe distance of at least 100 yards, recreational boaters should be mindful of the powerful side thrusters used by large ships when docking and maneuvering. These forces can create hazardous conditions for smaller boats that venture too close.

“Memorial Day weekend is a time for people to get out and enjoy the water, but safety must come first,” said Dean Haen, Director of the Port of Green Bay. “Understanding how to operate responsibly around commercial traffic helps protect not only yourself and your passengers, but also the crews working on these vessels.”

Boaters are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings at all times, including watching for navigational aids, channel markers and other vessels. Wearing a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device is strongly recommended for everyone on board.

The Port also reminds visitors along the City Deck waterfront to avoid double docking boats, ensuring adequate space for large vessels to safely pass and dock. Additionally, recreational boaters should refrain from attempting to communicate directly with commercial ships, as this can distract crew members during critical navigation moments.

By staying informed and practicing safe boating habits, everyone can help ensure a safe and enjoyable start to the summer season on Green Bay’s waterways.
