Port of Green Bay: September tonnage just misses the mark

(Green Bay) – The Port of Green Bay barely missed meeting tonnage numbers from this time last year. The 2013 year-to-date totals are down one percent from 2012.

“We saw decreases in cement (-10%), coal (-10%) and limestone (-15%) in September,” said Dean Haen, Port and Resource Recovery director. “However, foreign imports of petroleum products and salt increased, which did help offset the losses, but not enough to put the numbers in the positive.”

The shipping season typically ends in December and Haen is confident the year will end on a positive note. “The Port is still very active with ships arriving on a fairly regular basis,” Haen said. “Mild weather has also helped, which means there is still an opportunity to gain tonnage and beat last year’s totals.”

The Port of Green Bay has 14 active terminal operators involved in shipping commodities.
