The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is announcing the 2013 – 2014 application cycle for Safe Routes to School projects.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs encourage children ages K – 8 to walk and bike to school by creating safer walking and biking routes. Funding for SRTS programs improve walking and biking travel options, promote healthier lifestyles in children at an early age, and decrease auto-related emissions near schools.
Local governments, state agencies and Indian tribes may apply. Construction-related projects costing more than $25,000 are eligible for funding, as are non-construction projects costing more than $5,000. A project sponsor must pay for the project and then seek reimbursement from the state. Federal funds will provide up to 100 percent of the project costs.
The deadline for SRTS application submissions is May 4, 2012. Applications and guidelines are available online at http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/localgov/aid/saferoutes.htm. Approved projects will be announced in August 2012.
Since 2007, WisDOT has awarded $13.4 million for 130 projects around the state. In 2011, Omro Middle School was nationally recognized for its Safe Routes to School program.
