Workshop in La Crosse for Hmong farmers

MADISON – Interest in growing organic vegetables continues to sprout among Hmong farmers. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is hosting a free workshop for Hmong farmers called “Growing Organic Vegetables” this month in La Crosse.

The workshop will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Training will begin at the La Crosse Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, Inc. at 1815 Ward Avenue.

Topics for the training include: pest and plant disease management, weed control, crop rotations and use of soil amendments and fertilizers. Methods and inputs used by successful organic vegetable farmers will be shared to help others grow good yields of quality crops.

Following the classroom discussion, participants will travel to an organic vegetable farm, approximately 20 minutes east of La Crosse. The tour will allow participants to see an actual farm operation and ask questions.

This workshop is being planned by the DATCP, La Crosse Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, Inc. and Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES).

To register for the workshop, contact DATCP’s Jack Chang at 608-575-3782 jack.chang@wisconsin.gov. Connect with DATCP on Twitter at twitter.com/widatcp or Facebook at facebook.com/widatcp.
