Cutting-edge scientific research that could translate into future jobs will be on display at the fourth annual Wisconsin Science and Technology Symposium.
The event, July 28-29, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, will bring together researchers, students, and community members to learn the latest on biofuel production, nanotechnology and fuel cell development.
“The symposium covers a lot of areas of science. It really highlights what you can learn and how you can use it in real life,” said Eric Brown, assistant professor of biological sciences at UW-Whitewater and a speaker at the symposium.
Thursday, July 28, features a one-hour scientific poster session on faculty and student research. Stephanie Simonet, a UW-Whitewater senior studying biology, is one of the students featured. Her poster, “Enhancing the photo reactivity of TiO2 nanoparticles to degrade biological structures” features bionanotechnology.
“The poster presents the research that has been done in our lab. There are two applications to the research — disinfection (killing of bacteria) and cancer research,” said Simonet.
On Friday, July 29, a workshop will focus on a new online training tool for entrepreneurs, partially developed by UW-Whitewater.
The tool is designed to help faculty members and students interested in pursuing and commercializing technology research, said Ally Hauser, senior associate at WiSys Technology Foundation.
“Successful technology commercialization requires knowledge of intellectual property, confidentiality, and market research, which are a few of the topics covered in this tool,” Hauser said.
In addition, the symposium offers time to network, attend workshops and listen to speakers. Organizers hope the symposium will ignite new collaborations.
The symposium will be held in Timothy J. Hyland Hall on the UW-Whitewater campus. The cost to attend is $50 and includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments on both days of the symposium. The registration deadline is July 22. Student scholarships are available.
A reception will be held Thursday night at the Innovation Center at Whitewater University Technology Park for an additional $12.
WiSys Technology Foundation, a nonprofit group that provides technology transfer services to University of Wisconsin System campuses, organized the event.
