UW-Stevens Point: Lecture explores potential medical applications for nanotechnology research

Nanotechnology’s use in medicine will be explored at the first presentation of the College of Letters and Science 2010-11 Community Lecture Series at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Robin Tanke, professor of chemistry, will present “Nanotechnology and Its Potential Medical Applications,” on Thursday, September 9, at 7 p.m. in the Pinery Room at the Portage County Public Library in Stevens Point.

According to Tanke, nanotechnology is not only in the news but is finding increasingly more applications in the marketplace. In her lecture, Tanke will discuss nanotechnology terminology, including the terms “quantum dots” and “metal nanoparticles.” Furthermore, she will discuss the potential for these nanomaterials to improve medical diagnostics and treatment.

Tanke is a specialist in organometallic chemistry and catalysis. She came to UWSP in 1998. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate from Yale University.
