The Midwest Food Processors Association (MWFPA) has awarded six $1,500 scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in agriculture or food science at UW-Madison, UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls.
Three students were chosen to each receive $1,500 from the Kenneth G. Weckel/MWFPA Scholarship Fund. The students selected were:
Charles Lee, UW-Madison
Nur Badrol Hisham, UW-River Falls
Megan Kleiber, UW-River Falls
The MWFPA also selected the following three students to each receive $1,500 from the Carleton A. Friday/MWFPA Scholarship Fund:
Alex Hansen, UW-Platteville
Jeffrey Faust, UW – River Falls
Anna Troester, UW-Platteville
The two scholarship programs were created by the MWFPA in honor of leaders in the food processing industry. The Kenneth G. Weckel Scholarship is named for a University of Wisconsin food science professor who contributed greatly to the advancement of vegetable and fruit processing through his research and teaching. The other scholarship is named for Carleton A. Friday whose family founded the Friday Canning Company of New Richmond, Wisconsin.
The scholarship winners have been invited to attend the MWFPA’s 106th Annual Convention and 83rd Food Processing Crops Conference, the largest and most established food processing gathering in the Midwest. It will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2010 through Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Green Bay, Wisconsin, KI Convention Center.
“The MWFPA recognizes the vital role played by agriculture and the food processing industry in Wisconsin’s economy,” said MWFPA president Nick George. “These scholarships help students to continue their education and support the growth of these two major Wisconsin industries.”
Applications for the two scholarship programs are available beginning in February each year and can be obtained from the MWFPA by calling 608-255-9946 or going to its website at http://www.mwfpa.org.
