Newsmakers from UW-Stevens Point and an even broader portion of Central Wisconsin now have a high-quality connection to the airwaves of Wisconsin Public Radio, thanks to a new studio on the UWSP campus.

The facility, located in the Communication Arts Center on Reserve Street, links to WPR’s Wausau Regional Studios, whose programming, along with WPR’s statewide offerings and several national broadcasts, is carried on four different stations. The studio connects UWSP to the stations and the statewide network in a way that will sound as if interviewees are actually sitting in Wausau or Madison.

“The university’s partnership with WPR is a win-win,” noted UWSP’s Interim Dean of Fine Arts and Communication, James Haney. “We look forward to hearing more of our faculty experts on the air, along with more voices from the region who will come to the studio for interviews on programs like ‘Route 51,’” he added.

Gerard McKenna, interim head of the Division of Communication, noted the opportunities for students that will come from the partnership.

“We see great potential for students to gain hands-on experience both in radio production and in broadcast journalism. We look forward to developing significant opportunities for UWSP students to become involved and to apply the skills they develop in our programs and through their work at our campus station, WWSP 90FM,” McKenna said.

We are very excited to be part of the UWSP and greater Stevens Point communities, said Rick Reyer, WPR’s Central Wisconsin Regional Manager. “Not only will this partnership create greater accessibility to area personalities and provide excellent student experiences, it will also allow for a greater connection between the region and our statewide network,” Reyer added.
