Milwaukee—Mayor Tom Barrett visited Port Washington based Allen-Edmonds today to meet with President and CEO, John Stollenwerk and employees who commute to Ozaukee County from Milwaukee. About 60% of the workforce at Allen-Edmonds lives in Milwaukee. Many employees commute by bus provided by the company. Employees keep a schedule of four ten-hour workdays in the plant each week giving employees three days off in a row. “I am delighted to be here,” stated Mayor Tom Barrett. “Allen-Edmonds is a great company that provides family supporting jobs. At a time when this country is seeing other companies outsource jobs, it is gratifying to see an employer such as Allen-Edmonds keep jobs here.”

Mayor Barrett urged other manufacturing companies to follow Allen-Edmond’s lead. “Manufacturing companies can succeed and compete globally by utilizing productivity improvement techniques such as Lean and Six Sigma and cross training employees to perform multiple functions. Manufacturers can continue to provide quality products for which we are known around the world while retaining skilled workers and providing family supporting jobs.”

During his visit, Mayor Barrett toured the company’s manufacturing plant and thanked employees. “Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated.”
