Madison–Governor Jim Doyle announced today that the University of Wisconsin-Madison Charter Street facility will install a new biomass boiler.

Secretary Rod Nilsestuen issued the following statement regarding the decision.

“I applaud Governor Doyle for his leadership with this decision to make the Charter Street facility a biomass to energy project. This decision provides a new opportunity for farmers and rural communities to create more valued added products and generate economic growth.” said Rod Nilsestuen, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. “Whether you are talking about wood chips, switchgrass, corn stover or another biobased source, I am confident that Wisconsin farmers, woodlot owners and rural businesses will grab a hold of this opportunity.”

“We will see new businesses and new jobs created around the collection, processing and delivery of biomass for Charter Street and other facilities in the future,” Nilsestuen added. “I know Wisconsin farmers will partner with these new businesses to promote greater renewable energy use and grow our state economy.”
