WED AM News: Evers, DWD announce $6.6 million in AI workforce development grants

— Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Dept. of Workforce and Development announced $6.6 million in grants to train workers on artificial intelligence and other skills.

The grants, to be distributed across 84 employers, are meant to train over 3,800 people across the state as part of the Wisconsin Training for Resilient Advanced Industry Needs employer grant program.

Evers announced the creation of the program, supported by federal funding, during his State of the State address earlier this year.

“Making sure Wisconsin is prepared to create jobs for the future and meet the rapidly evolving needs of a 21st-century economy must be a top priority. I’m proud to get these funds out the door to help train Wisconsinites across the state in these in-demand, fast-growing industries,” Evers said in a news release.

— Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce says a new report showing growing consolidation of Wisconsin’s hospitals “should concern every family and employer in the state.”

The Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy report found seven of the state’s eight hospital referral regions were now considered highly concentrated – meaning fewer healthcare providers are serving more patients.

The report found that the consolidation was due more to hospital closures and mergers rather than patients opting to seek care at other facilities. A previous CROWE report found that hospital care on average was over 25% costlier than care in Illinois.

“When patients and employers have fewer options, prices rise,” WMC Associate Vice President of Government Relations Rachel Ver Velde said in a news release. “Less competition contributes to an already unaffordable healthcare market.”

Ver Velde also called for healthcare price transparency reforms.
