YouFirst, Grind Season: Partners to improve maternal health outcomes in the City of Racine

YouFirst, a City of Racine Public Health Department maternal and family health initiative, is partnering with Grind Season, a community‑focused gym dedicated to strength, fitness, and empowerment. Together, they will offer programming that supports women’s health broadly; helping women stay healthy for themselves, their families, and future pregnancies; while working to reduce maternal mortality in Racine.

Maternal mortality continues to disproportionately affect women of color and those facing structural barriers. YouFirst and Grind Season are addressing this challenge with a holistic approach that combines accessible fitness, community support, and evidence‑based maternal health resources. The partnership highlights that strong maternal outcomes begin long before pregnancy, and that maintaining physical and mental wellness is central to lifelong health.

Key elements include:

  • Women‑Centered Fitness and Wellness Programs: Grind Season will provide consultations, health assessments, and individualized goal‑setting. Participants can choose an at‑home nutrition and exercise plan or machine‑based training at the facility.
  • Mental Health Support Through Movement: Regular physical activity reduces stress, improves mood, enhances sleep, and builds resilience—benefits essential to overall and maternal health.
  • Increased Visibility for YouFirst Resources: Through Grind Season’s trusted community setting, more women will learn about YouFirst’s education, support navigation, and maternal health services.

“YouFirst is committed to supporting healthy women, healthy pregnancies, and healthy futures for families in Racine,” said Cody Pearce, Community Health Director. “Partnering with Grind Season expands access to wellness opportunities that benefit women long before, during, and after pregnancy.”

Grind Season owner and personal trainer DaJerrian Smith added, “Our gym is built on the belief that strength changes lives. Working with YouFirst allows us to support women physically, mentally, and emotionally.”

YouFirst chose to partner with Grind Season to improve the health and well-being of reproductive aged women while investing in the community. By combining maternal health expertise with accessible fitness opportunities, YouFirst and Grind Season aim to create healthier futures for women, children, and the Racine community.
