MILWAUKEE, WI (March 25, 2026)—Bill Curley, a 72-year-old Milwaukee resident, is preparing to walk 100 miles beginning April 1 to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society, marking his second consecutive year undertaking the challenge.
Motivated by a deeply personal connection to the disease, the walk honors family members lost to cancer and aims to support ongoing research and patient services.
“Cancer is a six-letter word in my family, having claimed both my grandfather, who died of lung cancer in 1964, and more recently my late father, who passed away from leukemia in 2001,” Curley said. “I was only 10 years old when my grandfather died on October 29, 1964. I remember his hospital stay and funeral vividly.”
Curley also recalled the sudden and devastating loss of his father. “My dad appeared to be in perfect health as recently as Thanksgiving 2000. But on December 5, a routine blood test revealed leukemia. He was gone in less than two months.”
Determined to make a difference, Curley will begin the 100-mile journey on Wednesday, April 1, walking regardless of weather conditions. In preparation, he has equipped himself with new walking shoes and is committed to completing the challenge in support of cancer research and advocacy.
All donations made in support of the walk are tax-deductible and will directly benefit the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.
