Washington, D.C. – To mark the 16th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Protect Our Care is releasing a new report detailing the relentless assault on health care by congressional Republicans. Despite the ACA’s hard-fought wins for the American people, congressional Republicans have remained in lockstep to rip away what for countless working families is a critical lifeline to affordable care. Premiums have now doubled, tripled, and quadrupled for over 22 million Americans — hikes that are impossible for working families to budget around. As a result, one million have been priced out of coverage, and many more will follow as families are forced to reckon with Trump and Republicans’ war on the ACA busting their budgets. Coupled with pricing millions out of coverage, congressional Republicans gutted $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, forcing nearly 800 hospitals, nursing homes, maternity wards, and other critical providers nationwide to shutter, be at risk of closing, or cut essential services.
“This ACA anniversary is not just one to celebrate, but to mobilize,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “Since the ACA brought much-needed relief to working families, it has endured an endless barrage of attacks from congressional Republicans. Now, across the nation, you’ll find the GOP’s war on the ACA bearing fruit, health care costs skyrocketing, and Americans forced to make gut-wrenching decisions about their futures.
“Small business owners are being forced to shutter what they spent blood, sweat, and tears building. Parents lie awake at night with a gnawing fear of not being able to pay rent, put food on the table, and afford soaring premiums. This November, voters will hold Republicans to account for driving this affordability crisis and gambling with their lives, all to pad the pockets of billionaires and big corporations.”
The report is part of Protect Our Care’s nationwide, seven-figure campaign, “Technical Foul: The GOP’s Health Care Madness,” to hold republicans accountable for their devastating cuts to health care. Throughout the month of March, Protect Our Care will hold Trump and his allies’ feet to the fire for putting hospitals in crisis, attacking the ACA, and making Americans sick again — launching today will be our new ads targeting 14 vulnerable congressional Republicans for their role in the GOP health care crisis.
