MILWAUKEE, WI –Today, U.S. Representative Gwen Moore and healthcare advocates joined Protect Our Care Wisconsin to discuss a new report kicking off Protect Our Care’s March Madness campaign, which highlights how Donald Trump and his allies in Congress are turning their backs on the American people and gutting health care coverage to give the ultra-wealthy another tax break.

In the first year of his second term, the Trump Administration has skyrocketed premiums, raised out-of-pocket costs and slashed Medicaid funding, forcing working families to choose between health care and other basic necessities. Due to GOP premium hikes, 22 million Americans will lose their health care coverage entirely this year alone, including small business ownersfarmers, and older adults.

Already, more than 20,000 Wisconsinites have left the ACA Marketplace when comparing the most recent open enrollment period with the same period one year later.

As a direct result of the Trump administration’s attacks on health care, hospitals and nursing homes will continue shuttering, state enrollees in Medicaid risk losing coverage and prescription drug prices will soar. Speakers addressed how these health care cuts harm Wisconsinites and were a choice by Trump and the Republican Congress to gut vital, popular health care programs that Americans across the political spectrum depend on.

“Instead of lowering costs for working families, my Republican colleagues made the largest cuts to health care in American history with the poorly named One Big Beautiful Bill, said Congresswoman Moore. “They gutted Medicaid, ripping coverage from nearly 33,000 of my constituents. And of course, they allowed insurance premiums for Affordable Care Act plans to skyrocket for over 7,000 residents of Wisconsin’s fourth congressional district.”

“Extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits is central to the survival of small businesses just like mine,” said Main Street Alliance member Chef Dan Jacobs. “The ACA leveled the playing field that has long been tilted towards large corporations. I urge Congress to protect and strengthen the Affordable Care Act. Small businesses like mine depend on it.”

“Everyone needs healthcare,” said Emma Widmar, a 26-year old who receives support from Medicaid’s IRIS program. “Republicas have cut Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA. Why? Things happen every day that are unexpected. We know that things happen to people, why are we taking an axe to the safety net?”
