Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Senate Bill 23, a bipartisan measure to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from 30 days to one year after birth. The bill, which has already cleared the State Senate, now heads to Governor Tony Evers for his signature. Wisconsin Right to Life urges Governor Evers to sign this important legislation, which would provide crucial support to mothers across Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Right to Life has championed this legislation for several legislative sessions and celebrates its passage today. We thank Senator James and Representative Snyder for their tireless advocacy in advancing this bill, as well as the hundreds of pro-life advocates throughout our state who contacted their elected officials in support of this effort.
In response, Heather Weininger, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life, shared: “This is a win today for moms and babies. Expanding postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months acknowledges that care for women doesn’t end at delivery. If we are serious about valuing both mother and child, our policies must reflect that commitment beyond birth.”
