Evergreen Action: Wisconsin data center bill risks slowing clean energy development

On Friday, Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature introduced legislation that restricts how renewable energy can be used to power data centers, raising concerns about higher costs and unnecessary limits on clean energy development. In response, Evergreen Action State Advocacy Director Courtney Brady released the following statement:

“Wisconsin has a real opportunity to meet growing demand with clean, affordable power, but this proposed data center approach risks limiting that potential and raising energy bills. This bill would force data centers to rely solely on on-site renewable generation, blocking them from using off-site wind and solar projects that deliver cheaper, scalable clean power. Energy doesn’t need to be generated on the same site it’s used—power lines make it possible to deliver electricity across the state. A flexible approach that allows both on-site and off-site renewables would deliver cleaner power faster, strengthen grid reliability, and protect consumers from unnecessary costs. Wisconsin should be expanding clean energy options that benefit all ratepayers, not narrowing them.”
