This milestone marks a new chapter for the 25-year-old firm, as founder Richard Sherer steps back from ownership following a carefully planned succession that began over five years ago when Blavat was named partner.
Sherer established Deep River Partners on the principles of design excellence, client service, and collaboration. He will continue to serve clients, design schematic visions, and contribute creatively; Sherer’s legacy remains deeply embedded in the firm’s culture and values.
Blavat’s journey with Deep River began more than two decades ago as an Architectural Design Associate, and his steady rise through the firm reflects his lasting commitment to design leadership, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. His guidance has supported and contributed to the growth of both the team and the company. He has led design efforts on award-winning residential projects, mentored emerging professionals, and strengthened our connections to the wider profession and community—ensuring the firm’s reputation for delivering finely crafted, luxury residential projects.

Blavat holds both a Bachelor of Architectural Sciences and a Master of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and is an active leader in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Wisconsin Chapter. He founded the AIA Wisconsin Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN), served as an AIA Milwaukee Section board member and past president, and has presented nationally on residential design. His community involvement includes serving on his local HOA Architectural Review Board in Port Washington, WI, and supporting Multiple Sclerosis organizations such as MS Just Keep Moving.
The ownership transition has been implemented over the past year to ensure continuity for clients, staff, and collaborators. Projects continue to move forward with the same precision and collaborative spirit that define Deep River’s work.
