Wisconsin Historical Society: Paul Kuehl House listed in the State Register of Historic Places

PLATEVILLE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Paul Kuehl House in Platteville (Grant County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The Tudor Revival residence was constructed by the original owner in 1937.

The Paul Kuehl House is a distinctive example of the Tudor Revival style that features Rustic elements. The residence features steeply-pitched roof lines with wide sweeping roof planes, a multi-gabled roofline, stone wall cladding, multi-plane casement windows with defined sills, and an arched primary entrance. These are commonly found elements in Tudor Revival residences; however, the rooflines are exaggerated, extending to the first-floor windows and very low to an imaginary water table in addition to original windows and wall cladding. The residence is elevated through the use of Rustic style elements, a style popularized at the time through the National Park Service and Civilian Conservation Corps workers that were constructing stone and wood buildings during the Great Depression through the New Deal program. These features include a wood-paneled overhead door, wood shingles in the gable-ends and dormers, along with a detached garage that is clad in wood shingles and wood siding.

This residence was constructed by its original owner and civil engineer, Paul Kuehl. It stands today as the only example of the Tudor Revival and Rustic styles in Platteville. This is a private residence; please respect their privacy.

The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
