Milwaukee-area faith leaders gather with voting rights activists, community partners, and voters to demand our elected leaders end this Government shutdown and PROTECT OUR RIGHT TO HEALTHCARE!!
MILWAUKEE, WI—As if the passage of the latest tax bill in Washington wasn’t going to cause enough pain, Republicans in Washington have now shut down the Government in their effort to take away health care from tens of thousands of Wisconsinites. Souls to the Polls is bringing together the nonpartisan Fight For Our Lives Coalition made up of grassroots leaders, faith based, youth and community organizations that will stand up to fight back the policy changes that threaten our health and economic survival.
On the importance of this moment to our community, Reverend Greg Lewis, Executive Director of Souls to the Polls stated, “This is the FIGHT of our lives!” Lewis continued, “They are moving to inflict harm on those with the least among us. First, they were coming for our medicare and medicaid, now they can’t even be bothered to show up to work in an effort to take away the support for Obamacare. They are coming for our housing, our education and our voting rights! Our seniors are going to lose their health care, our poorest are going to lose what little resources they currently have, and we are not going to stand by and watch it happen. We are going to organize, we are going to stand up, we are going to use our power to vote to make the changes that will enable our communities to survive and thrive” Join us!
At the rally, Milwaukee clergy, community members, activists, faith and student leaders will raise awareness and rally the community to fight against this aggressive attack on those who have the least among us. It’s an opportunity to strengthen the power of underrepresented and disenfranchised groups including Black and Brown residents, senior citizens, students, and low-income workers. This diverse coalition will hold the line against attacks on Wisconsinites’ freedoms and democracy, and send a message that we will not stand by as those in power try to decimate our community.
