MON Health Care Report: Cross-generational programs key to improving health for native populations

— Creating programs for native populations and ensuring they control their own research are keys to improving health for indigenous groups across generations, a UW-Madison researcher says.

One of the biggest barriers to improving health care and health care research among indigenous populations is a lack of participation, researcher Kyle Conniff said during today’s seminar put on by UW-Madison’s Population Health Sciences Department. Multiple factors, such as family and work responsibilities, transportation difficulties, a lack of trust in the health care system and others also make it difficult to do good research on indigenous health care issues.

Conniff said one way to help address the problem long-term is to work on developing programs within indigenous communities that engage multiple generations that “focus on cultural and knowledge transfer, and working within the strengths of the tribes.”

“And ideally things that are movement-centric and have education components, both for building health but also trying to increase the rate and interest in higher education among indigenous youth and populations,” he said.

Conniff, who’s also an ultimate frisbee coach and athlete, said sports are a great way to get different generations to interact and share community culture and knowledge.

Another key aspect of making sure health care research and knowledge spreads among indigenous populations is ensuring they maintain ownership and sovereignty over the research they do and the data that comes out of it, he added.
