WCTC announces AI-focused startup accelerator program

Waukesha County Technical College has launched a new accelerator program to boost technology-focused startups, particularly those working in AI.

WCTC recently announced the gALPHA and gBETA Applied AI Lab accelerators alongside startup organization gener8tor, which include plans to recruit companies in the Waukesha County area to support other startups in the region.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for entrepreneurs to partner with a premiere, results-driven organization such as gener8tor and have the support of WCTC faculty and staff,” WCTC President Richard Barnhouse said in a statement on the new programs, also touting the college’s broader focus on artificial intelligence.

The college earlier this year announced the new Applied AI Lab innovation center, following the launch of short-term AI certificates in fall 2023. WCTC has an AI data specialist associate degree program that’s slated to start accepting students this fall, making it the first two-year AI degree offered in the state.

Dan Lindberg, director of the lab, says the newly announced accelerator program will “further spur innovation” in southeastern Wisconsin and boost demand for AI-related jobs.

“By helping Waukesha County entrepreneurs craft data-driven, AI-enabled businesses, we’re ensuring the benefits of AI are enjoyed by businesses of all sizes and types,” he said.

The gALPHA Applied AI Lab program is a four-week “venture creation” workshop to help people interested in starting a business create startup companies using data and AI with help from gener8tor specialists. These include mentors, strategic partners and others.

Meanwhile, the gBETA Applied AI Lab accelerator is linked to gener8tor’s free, seven-week accelerator program, which offers specialized coaching and access to the accelerator network’s national network. Meant for those further along in their startup journey, the program aims to prepare graduates to form local partnerships and raise capital, according to the announcement.

WCTC and gener8tor are currently hiring for the lead program manager to oversee the gBETA accelerator. Organizers are accepting applications now for the gALPHA program, which begins Sept. 18.
