MADISON, Wis. — Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers announced a tentative shared revenue agreement that will significantly boost funding for K-12 schools and increase funds for essential services in local municipalities across Wisconsin. The tentative plan will also provide certain local power to Milwaukee that state Republicans initially attempted to stifle.

The following are comments from Mike Browne, deputy director of A Better Wisconsin Together:

“We appreciate Gov. Evers and legislative Democrats for doing all they can to find compromise where possible and delivering this historic investment for Wisconsin schools and local communities.

“For far too long, Republican politicians have been forcing local Wisconsin communities to do more with less. But, our shared resources in Wisconsin should deliver the programs, schools, and support all of our families need – not serve as a backdoor for a right wing political agenda, which is largely what Republicans were pushing for prior to this new agreement with the governor.

 “We are hopeful that the state GOP leaves their extremism and partisanship behind on the many other important issues at stake as budget deliberations continue.”

In addition to a 20% increase in support to local municipalities, the bipartisan tentative agreement on shared revenue will:

  • Deliver $1 billion in spendable revenue for K-12 education;
  • Provide $30 million to school-based mental health services;
  • Reach 33.3% reimbursement for special education;
  • Allocate $50 million to improve reading and literacy skills among Wisconsin students.
