MADISON, Wis. — As Derrick Van Orden tries to rewrite his record on health care in Washington while cozying up to his billionaire backers, the facts are not on his side. In July, Van Orden voted for the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill, a measure that would slash health care for more than 30,000 of his own constituents. His vote gutted nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and CHIP, ripping coverage away from working families in order to bankroll bigger tax breaks for billionaires like Elon Musk.
“No amount of fabricated accomplishments will erase the devastating Medicaid cuts Van Orden voted for in the Big Ugly Bill,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Philip Shulman. “Van Orden is scrambling to cover up the truth because he knows it’s indefensible.”
See below for more information on the impacts of the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill on Wisconsin:
- The CBO confirmed that the big ugly bill could add $4 trillion to the national debt — all for the sake of tax cuts for billionaires — while cutting over $1 trillion in Medicaid and CHIP funding.
- The bill also has the largest SNAP and food security program cuts in history, and could jeopardize some, if not all, food security for over 22 million people.
- 1.3 million Wisconsinites rely on Medicaid for their health care, including 3 of every 8 children.
- Roughly 700,000 Wisconsinites rely on SNAP for food security.
- Roughly 30,000 households in Van Orden’s district rely on SNAP for their food security.
- At least three Wisconsin hospitals will be at risk of closing due to the Big Ugly Bill
- The poorest 20% of Americans will lose 3.8% of their income, while the richest 20% will see their incomes increase by 3.7%
