PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Platteville Army National Guard Armory was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 2026. The Art Deco armory was constructed in 1942 through funds from the Works Progress Administration in Platteville, Grant County.
Platteville Army National Guard Armory was designed by Henry C. Hengels, the military architect for the State of Wisconsin, and funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Armory stands today as the largest WPA project completed in the Platteville area and the only WPA-funded armory located in southwestern Wisconsin. It also represents the monetary shift of armory construction funding from private, municipal and state resources to the federal government’s responsibility, which remains today.
The Armory was erected in the Art Deco style, featuring glass block windows, multiple pilasters, symmetrical and stately façade, military insignia and masonry construction with a headhouse and drill hall plan. In addition to accommodating National Guard training and administrative functions, the Armory served as a local community center hosting sports games, dances, concerts and assemblies.
