Wisconsin Agri-Business Association: Governor signs agricultural weight permit bill and CDL grant training bill into law

Madison, Wis. – April 1, 2026 – The Wisconsin Agribusiness Association (WABA) applauds Governor Tony Evers for signing Assembly Bill 679 and Assembly Bill 766 into law, marking a major step forward for Wisconsin’s agribusiness industry.

Assembly Bill 679, authored by Representative Brent Jacobson and Senator Cory Tomczyk, establishes a statewide permit allowing the transport of certain agricultural commodities, including grain, feed, and fertilizer, on six-axle trucks weighing up to 91,000 pounds on state highways. The policy is designed to improve efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen the state’s agricultural supply chain.

Assembly Bill 766, authored by Representative Treig Pronschinske and Senator Eric Wimberger expands the eligibility for Commercial Drivers License (CDL) training grants to applicants other than training providers. Currently, Wisconsin’s commercial driver training grant program currently provides funding only to in-state training providers who help individuals earn a CDL. This bill increases flexibility, expands training opportunities, and helps grow Wisconsin’s workforce of commercial drivers.

Throughout the session, WABA has collaborated closely with lawmakers and member companies to advance both proposals. Throughout the legislative process, WABA staff and member businesses provided testimony highlighting the real-world transportation challenges facing Wisconsin agriculture and the need for a more efficient system to remain competitive with neighboring states.

“WABA applauds Governor Evers for his support of Wisconsin’s agri-business industry and for signing both pieces of legislation into law. The weight permit bill will be a huge benefit to WABA members, improving the efficiency of our agricultural supply chain and ensuring Wisconsin agriculture can finally compete with neighboring states on weight limits,” says Grace Howe, WABA Executive Director.

These bills represent key policy priorities for WABA and a meaningful win for agribusinesses across the state. The association remains committed to advocating for practical solutions that strengthen Wisconsin agriculture.
