TUE Healthcare Report: UW Health again tops list of state’s best hospitals

— U.S. News & World Report has once again rated UW Health as the No. 1 regional hospital in Wisconsin, followed by Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center and Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

UW Health has now topped the national publication’s list of best hospitals in Wisconsin for 15 years in a row, according to the Madison health system, which touted the ranking today in a release.

It was nationally ranked in nine specialties and three children’s specialties — more than the rest of the Wisconsin hospitals that made the list combined.

UW Health Chief Operating Officer Dr. Peter Newcomer says once again claiming the No. 1 ranking “is something we’re incredibly proud of” and signals the high quality of care available to Wisconsin residents.

“It speaks to the talent, innovation and commitment of our teams, who continue to advance patient care, research and outcomes across our health system,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee came in at No. 2 on the list and was nationally ranked for two specialties. Froedtert and the MCW, which landed at No. 3, earned a national ranking for three specialties.

Rounding out the top 10, the publication rated: Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire at No. 4; Aurora Medical Center-Grafton at No. 5; SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Madison at No. 6; Aspirus Wausau Hospital and Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse tied for No. 7; UnityPoint Health Meriter in Madison at No. 9; and Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay at No. 10.

— Attorney General Josh Kaul is touting a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from discontinuing mental health grant funding.

A federal judge last week temporarily blocked the U.S. Education Department from revoking school-based mental health grants after Wisconsin and several other states in July sued to block the department from terminating the grants.

This lawsuit is the second time Wisconsin has joined a lawsuit to stop the federal government from pulling this funding. The state sued last July to stop the Education Department from discontinuing the grants.

The latest termination effort would cost the Universities of Wisconsin and the Department of Public Instruction some $12.5 million if successful, according to the DOJ.

“This ruling keeps this important funding in place for now,” Kaul said in a statement yesterday. “We will continue fighting back against the Trump administration’s attack on funding that supports mental health services for students.”

— ACLU-WI is challenging a Wisconsin law requiring proof of a “surgical sex change procedure” for transgender individuals to change a sex marker on their birth certificate.

ACLU-WI, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of Trans Law Help Wisconsin, argues the law is unconstitutional because it violates the state’s equal protection clause by requiring transgender or intersex people to prove a “surgical sex change procedure” while a cisgender person whose birth certificate is wrong due to an administrative error has a different burden of proof.

The lawsuit also argues that the term “surgical sex change procedure” is ambiguous and makes it unclear what procedures would meet the statute. Additionally, the lawsuit argues that the state discriminates against transgender people who choose not to undergo a “surgical sex change procedure.”

The lawsuit, filed in Dane County, also alleges that the requirement to disclose medical procedures violates a “constitutional expectation of informational privacy.”
