Dane County residents and commuters encouraged to drive less, cut costs, and go green this April
DANE COUNTY, Wis. (March 26, 2026) – RoundTrip Greater Madison is challenging residents to drive less this April through its annual Spring Roll Challenge, with a goal of reaching 10,000 car-free and carpool trips across Dane County during Earth Month.
The free challenge is open to everyone 18 and older who lives or works in Dane County and encourages participants to swap solo driving trips for greener options like riding the bus, biking, walking, and carpooling.
To get started, create a free account at www.RoundTripGreaterMadison.org or download the RoundTrip Greater Madison app. By logging trips throughout April, participants will see their miles traveled, pollution avoided, and money saved—both individually and as part of the community-wide goal.
Participants will be automatically entered into more than 30 weekly and grand prize drawings featuring gift cards and memberships from this year’s challenge sponsors—Festival Foods, Forage Kitchen, Ian’s Pizza, Madison BCycle, The Soap Opera, and Willy Street Co-op.
“You might think replacing a few car trips each week won’t make a big difference, but those choices add up—especially when people across Dane County are making them together,” said RoundTrip Program Manager Zia Brucaya. “Whether it’s biking to the library, riding the bus to meet friends, or carpooling to work, those trips are often healthier, more enjoyable, and easier on your wallet than driving alone.”
Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, with solo car trips accounting for a significant share, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Choosing alternatives to driving alone can help reduce emissions and can also benefit household budgets.
“People are also feeling the impact of rising gas prices,” Brucaya added. “Earth Month is a great reminder that transportation options that are good for the planet are also good for our wallets.”
