Marquette University Law School: To host discussion on energy and water use by data centers, April 8

MILWAUKEE — Marquette University Law School’s Water Law and Policy Initiative will host “Data Centers and the Energy-Water Nexus,” a moderated discussion on energy and water use by data centers, on Wednesday, April 8, at 9 a.m., in the Lubar Center at Eckstein Hall, 12:15 W. Michigan.

Energy generation and clean water are tightly intertwined, in that it takes one to produce the other. The discussion will examine how data centers draw on both—exploring, more specifically, the resulting stress on power grids and water supplies, community opposition centered on environmental harms, and the regulatory challenges posed by data centers.

David Strifling, associate professor of law and director of the Water Law and Policy Initiative, and Art Harrington, adjunct professor of law and counsel at Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., will co-moderate a conversation with:

  • Tom Content, executive director, Citizens Utility Board of Wisconsin
  • Cheryl Nenn, riverkeeper, Milwaukee Riverkeepers
  • Kate Phillips, senior corporate counsel, WEC Energy Group

Registration for this event is free, open to the public, and available online. Media interested in attending should contact Kevin Conway at kevin.m.conway@marquette.edu in advance.

Marquette Law School’s Water Law and Policy Initiative seeks to help establish the Law School and, more broadly, Marquette University as a center for study, exploration, discussion, and education concerning water issues. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the initiative seeks to assess the legal and regulatory aspects of water policy, to pursue opportunities for information exchange and collaboration on water topics, and to provide opportunities for interested citizens to become better informed on legal and policy aspects of critical water issues.
