MADISON, Wis. — In response to a handful of Democratic senators joining with Republicans to end the MAGA government shutdown, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker released the following statement:
“Democrats were fighting to ensure 275,000 Wisconsinites could receive health care and that over 700,000 people could have food put on the table. While grateful that we were able to get ironclad commitments to restore the food benefits Trump was illegally trying to rip out of the hands of working families, I’m incredibly disappointed that a handful of Democrats decided to take Republicans at their word on a health care vote instead of having a concrete deal.
“This moment requires us to fight, not fold. Senator Baldwin championed the people’s fight by refusing to give in to these ACA cuts, others in our party did not, and now health care prices could double, triple, or quadruple in price overnight.
“What comes next is an immense amount of unnecessary pain, suffering, and more soaring costs for working families – all because the Republicans decided they could fund tax breaks for billionaires like Elon Musk but not health care for Jane and Bob in Bayfield.
“We’re not going to give the Republicans a pass on the upcoming health care vote, which they will set up to fail. In Wisconsin, we will not back down and will be organizing in the lead-up to the vote to force each Republican to answer if they believe health care should be a choice between bankruptcy or a death sentence.”
