Wisconsin Historical Society: St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church listed in the National Register of Historic Places

TOWN OF CRYSTAL LAKE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in the National Register of Historic Places on July 18, 2025. The church was originally constructed in 1907 in the Town of Crystal Lake, Marquette County.

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at the rural intersection of State Highway 22 and County Road E in the Town of Crystal Lake. The property consists of a 1907 church, a 1906 church hall and Sunday school building, and a cemetery with burials dating from 1865. German Lutherans immigrated to the area and constructed the first St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on the property in 1865. As the community grew, the Gothic Revival Church was constructed.

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church stands today as the best intact example of an early-20th century Gothic Revival church in Marquette County. Significant for its architecture, character-defining features include the center-steeple, delicate brickwork, steeply pitched roof line, Gothic-arch windows and entrance, brick buttressing with stone caps, and a basilica plan. The interior is equally impressive with the extensive use of ornamental pressed metal throughout the church—on all walls and ceiling—along with original wooden flooring, staircase and church furniture.
