WEST ALLIS, Wis. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Mount Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Allis (Milwaukee County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The church was constructed in 1948 at 8633 West Becher Street.
Mount Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church is a mid-twentieth century ecclesiastical example of the Gothic Revival-style. Designed in a cruciform plan, it has irregular massing and masonry construction. Character-defining features include parapet end walls with stone coping, pilasters and stone quoining. Both pointed-arch and rectangular windows are highlighted by stained-glass designed by the prominent Conrad Schmitt Studios of Milwaukee. The interior is highlighted by extensive woodwork and includes Manitowoc Church Furniture Company-manufactured pews and furniture. A 1958 Educational Youth wing was conceived at the same time as the church, set back with a low roof line. Designed in the Modern Movement style, the wing continues the same stone cladding, such that it blends with the church, and features vertical window bands. Mount Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church stands among the best examples in West Allis of the Late Gothic Revival style.
The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
