— The latest Marquette University Law School poll illustrates the ongoing partisan divide over abortion in Wisconsin.
Among all registered voters tapped in the latest poll, 64% favor abortion being legal in all or most cases and 36% say it should be illegal in all or most cases.
“That has barely budged since the Dobbs decision overturned [Roe v. Wade,]” Poll Director Charles Franklin said yesterday during a livestream of the poll’s results. “It’s been quite steady for a long time, and even this basic balance was true before Dobbs. There’s been a little shift post-Dobbs, but a shift on the order of magnitude from about 60% to about 65% in favor of abortion rights.”
Franklin underlined the “substantial party split” over the issue, as 97% of Democrats in the poll were in favor of abortion being legal. The poll found 64% of Republicans said it should be illegal in all or most cases, he added.
“So there’s a third, 34% of Republicans, that favor at least abortion rights in some cases,” he said.
Meanwhile, 60% of independents were in favor of abortion being legal in all or most cases and 39% were opposed.
The poll also asked registered voters about Dem Gov. Tony Evers’ budget proposal to include $300 million for mental health services in schools, finding 66% of respondents were in favor while 34% were opposed. It’s supported by 94% of Democrats and 69% of independents, but 64% of Republicans were opposed to the idea.
“Not surprisingly, if you mention the governor and the amount, that there’s more of a party divide, but still overall support,” Franklin said.
When asked about a legislative proposal to extend post-partum Medicaid coverage to 12 months for new mothers, 67% of respondents were in favor and 33% were opposed. The plan was supported by 85% of Democrats and 74% of independents in the poll, while 54% of Republicans were opposed and 46% were in favor.
The poll of 864 registered voters was conducted Feb. 19-26.
