Today, the U.S. Senate narrowly passed the reconciliation bill by a vote of 51 to 50. The changes introduced in this legislation pose significant risks to individuals with disabilities, particularly through cuts to Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that these Medicaid cuts alone will result in at least 11.8 million people losing their healthcare coverage. Notably, the Senate’s version of the bill includes deeper Medicaid cuts than those proposed in the House bill.
Furthermore, the bill proposes a reduction of $300 billion in food assistance, which is expected to strip away crucial support from at least five million individuals. People with disabilities, who rely on Medicaid for their community living and health maintenance, will be among the hardest hit.
The impact of this legislation on people with disabilities and their communities would be devastating. We strongly urge the House of Representatives to vote against the Senate version of this bill to protect the health and sustenance of millions of Americans
