MADISON – Today, State Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) applauded Governor Tony Evers for signing the Advanced Practice Registered (APRN) Modernization Act (2025 Wisconsin Act 17) into law. The enacted legislation establishes a dedicated license for APRNs, including certified nurse-midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. Additionally, it authorizes these professionals to issue prescriptions, use the APRN title, and delegate specific clinical duties to qualified healthcare personnel. These changes bring Wisconsin in line with national standards and make it easier for skilled nurses to utilize the full scope of their training to meet the growing health care needs across the state.
“The APRN Modernization Act is the result of years of thoughtful collaboration among legislators, nurses, healthcare experts, and community advocates. This carefully crafted, bipartisan bill modernizes Wisconsin’s nursing laws and improves access to high-quality care, especially in rural and underserved communities,” said Rep. Subeck. “By strengthening clinical standards, protecting patients, and supporting our healthcare workforce, this legislation ensures we are able to meet the evolving health care needs of Wisconsinites today and into the future.”
Assembly Bill 257, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 17:
- Makes several changes related to the practicing, licensing, and certifying requirements for nurses as administered by the Board of Nursing.
- Creates a new licensure opportunity for RNs to become APRNs and establishes various oversight and safety provisions (including mandating the completion of education and continuing education requirements and collaboration with physicians); and
- Increases access to healthcare services for state residents.
“At a time when Wisconsin continues to experience a growing shortage of healthcare providers, the APRN Modernization Act provides a responsible and forward-thinking solution. This legislation expands the opportunities for advanced practice nurses to serve patients safely and effectively, while ensuring strong oversight and accountability,” said Rep. Subeck. “I am grateful to Governor Evers and the countless stakeholders who worked together with us in crafting this important legislation that prioritizes the health of Wisconsin families and communities.”
Rep. Subeck represents the 79th Assembly District and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
