Public Health Madison & Dane County: Abortion access narrows in Wisconsin, Public Health’s Nurse Navigator program offers free, confidential support

At Public Health Madison & Dane County, we believe a full range of reproductive health services, including abortion, is essential for healthy communities. Access to that kind of care is now becoming more limited in Wisconsin.

Starting on October 1, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced it will pause abortion services due to recent federal budget changes that affect Medicaid funding.

“Losing Planned Parenthood clinics as an option for abortion care means the full spectrum of reproductive health care will become very difficult to access in Wisconsin,” said Public Health Supervisor Sarah Hughes.

With this change, there will be only two independent clinics in Milwaukee that will offer abortion services for the entire state. According to state law, these clinics must require two appointments 24 hours apart, a mandatory ultrasound, and parental consent for minors. These requirements will likely lead to a backlog in appointments.

“We know this changing landscape can be confusing and overwhelming, that’s why our Nurse Navigators are standing by to help people understand all options around pregnancy and reproductive health care,” said Hughes.

“Public Health Madison & Dane County is here as a resource for anyone navigating this uncertain landscape, and I encourage anyone in need of these services to reach out. Their work is critical, and Dane County will continue to support them every step of the way,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard.

“I want to reaffirm our commitment to making Madison a place that values equitable access to reproductive choice for all, including access to abortion services,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

Public Health’s team of Registered Nurses can provide help finding abortion services, securing the funds needed for care, emergency contraception, and pregnancy support.

Reach the Nurse Navigators on weekdays from 8am-4:30pm by calling or texting (608) 690-0893 or filling out an online form. All counseling is free and confidential.
