Washington, D.C. — After months of chaos, four vulnerable House Republicans have finally signed on to the Democrats’ discharge petition to force a vote on a three-year clean extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. On January 1, over 21 million Americans will see their premiums double, triple, or even quadruple as a result of the Trump-GOP self-inflicted health care crisis.
All year, Democrats have stood united to protect the American people from GOP premium hikes and extend theoverwhelmingly popular tax credits. On the other hand, Republican leadership has ignored the public outcry and continued their attacks on working people’s health care — all to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Now, Republicans in swing districts are reading between the tea leaves, knowing that they will face a political disaster in 2026 unless they change course.
In response, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse released the following statement:
“Thanks to the hard work of Hakeem Jeffries on the Democrats’ discharge petition in the House, and other Democratic leaders who called attention to the devastating impacts of the GOP health care crisis, a clean three-year extension of the current tax credits now has majority support in the House and Senate. Extending those tax credits for working families already has the overwhelming support of the American people and is the only option on the table to prevent a massive spike in premiums at the end of this year. Mike Johnson, John Thune, and Donald Trump must get behind this commonsense plan to stave off further GOP health care price hikes, or every Republican will own the fallout come next year.”
