WISCONSIN – Today, Wednesday, December 10th, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers joined Protect Our Care and residents from across Wisconsin to discuss the ongoing Trump-GOP health care crisis as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) open enrollment period is underway.
After spearheading the longest shutdown in U.S. history to terminate ACA tax credits, Trump and Republicans are doubling down on efforts to hike premium costs for over 21 million Americans, as Wisconsinites log onto the ACA marketplace to find that their health plans are more than twice as expensive as last year.
Speakers highlighted the importance of access to health care coverage, along with the need to protect the ACA and other health care programs while holding Republicans accountable for ripping away tax credits.
“These tax credits are not luxuries – they are lifelines that make the difference between kids, families, and communities getting care and going without it,” said Governor Evers. “In 2025, 88 percent of Wisconsinites enrolled in coverage on HealthCare.gov qualified for these tax credits, saving an average of $664 a month. And without these enhanced tax credits, healthcare premiums for Wisconsinites are going to skyrocket.”
“For a 45-year-old in Wisconsin making $62,000, premiums are rising by an average of $2,844 a year,” said Fitchburg pharmacist Thad Schumacher. “That kind of increase means skipping appointments, delaying lab work, or rationing medications – choices that ultimately lead to worse health and more expensive care.”
“A majority of our staff are on an ACA plan,” said Chef Dave Heide. “No one has the reserves for an extra $600 a month (for health care). Eliminating health care for tens and hundreds of thousands of people isn’t a solution.”
“The cost of health care is incredible already, we pay so much in health care,” said Mel Ohlinger of Neenah. “Right now, we’re looking at these tremendous cost increases on top of what we’re already paying and it’s making us feel sick all the time.”
