MIDDLETON, WI — Independent, locally-owned businesses across Dane County are preparing for this year’s Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29, 2025, inviting shoppers to celebrate “shopping small” in a big way. The newly launched website, www.shopsmalldanecounty.com, brings together participating retailers, special promotions, local events, and the story of why buying locally matters.
“Our independent businesses are the heart of our communities,” said Colin Murraay, owner of Kylee’s Gift Cottage. “By working together and inviting our neighbors to shop small, we’ll keep more dollars circulating right here at home, supporting jobs, services and the local economy.”
Why it matters:
According to the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), spending with locally owned independent businesses circulates 2-4 times more in the local economy than dollars spent at national chains or online giants. AMIBA A study cited by AMIBA found that in one community, $100 spent at a local independent business generated $45 of local spending, compared to only $14 when spent at a chain.
In practical terms, every dollar spent at a local business has potential ripple effects: employees spend locally, local owners re-invest in the community, purchases of goods and services are made from other area businesses, and charitable contributions stay in the region.
