As the holiday season approaches, many in the Dane County community are reflecting on gratitude, connection, and the joy of giving. This year, the Dane County Department of Human Services is encouraging residents to consider one of the most meaningful gifts a person can offer: a safe, supportive home for a child entering foster care.
“While the holidays bring warmth and celebration for many, they can be an especially difficult time for children who are experiencing uncertainty,” said Dane County Foster Care Coordinator Erin Salzwedel. “Foster parents play a vital role in providing stability, comfort, and hope – not just during the holidays, but long after.”
Dane County continues to experience a growing need for foster parents from all backgrounds, including families who can care for teens, sibling groups, and children who may rely on consistent, reassuring support. Children need caring adults who will not only keep them safe, but also keep them connected to their family and culture – because when families and communities thrive, our children thrive as well.
Community members are invited to explore what it means to foster – whether for a short period during an emergency, or for respite care, or for longer-term care. Foster parents receive comprehensive training, ongoing support, and financial assistance to help meet a child’s needs.
