Beginning March 8, accounting students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will provide free income tax return preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a service of the IRS and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
To qualify for the service, clients should have income of $64,000 or less.
Appointments will take place in the dining area of UW-Eau Claire’s Davies Center, 77 Roosevelt Ave., Eau Claire, from 5-8 p.m. Fridays, March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29 and April 12.
Advance registration through the UW-Eau Claire VITA website is required. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
Clients must bring all of the following materials to their appointments:
- Social Security cards for taxpayers and all dependents.
- Earning statements.
- Copy of prior year’s tax return.
- Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement.
- Interest and dividend statements from financial institutions.
- Rent certificates from landlord or property tax statement.
- Financial institutions’ routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit.
Certain types of returns cannot be prepared by VITA volunteers: married filing separately, business returns, rental and farm.
