Milwaukee, Wis. – May 16, 2024 – The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will hold its annual commencement ceremony this Friday, May 17 at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. Degrees will be conferred upon more than 300 students who are graduating from MCW’s School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy and the School of Graduate Studies. MCW will also confer seven honorary degrees.
During this year’s ceremony, Dr. Michael Lovell, president of Marquette University, and Amy Lovell, co-founder of two local organizations that address mental health and wellness, will each receive honorary Doctor of Humanities degrees in acknowledgment of their leadership, community engagement, and contributions to promoting resiliency and advancing well-being for local youth and families.
Dalvery Blackwell, co-founder and executive director of Milwaukee’s African American Breastfeeding Network, will be recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for her commitment to addressing the injustices in healthcare and maternity care practices, as well as for her advocacy of safer births and breastfeeding equity.
Howard Fuller, PhD, distinguished professor emeritus at Marquette University, will be recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for his dedication to civil rights, public service, education reform and academic excellence.
“All of our honorary degree recipients embody the values of innovation, compassion and integrity, as reflected in their unwavering commitment to their communities. Their contributions continually inspire our ongoing pursuit of excellence in education, research, patient care and community health,” said John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, CEO and president of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
MCW will also confer honorary degrees on:
- Christine K. Cassel, MD, professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine; senior advisor for strategy and policy in the UCSF Department of Medicine – Doctor of Medical Science
- David C. Leach, MD, endocrinologist (retired) and executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education from 1997-2007 – Doctor of Medical Science
This year’s commencement address will be delivered by Catherine R. Lucey, MD, MACP, executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California at San Francisco. She will also receive an honorary Doctor of Medical Science.
