Waukesha, WI. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Theodore I. and Margaret Morey House in Waukesha (Waukesha County) on the State Register of Historic Places.
Theodore “Ted” Irwin Morey was born in Milwaukee and earned the moniker “dean of Waukesha real estate developers.” His first local subdivision was Westowne, among the first Waukesha suburbs. It was here that he chose to build his first home in 1928, a modest Tudor Revival-influenced cottage that he would remodel into the existing two-story Colonial Revival residence in about 1939, when an expanding family required additional living space
In 1970, with just over 40 years in the business, Morey estimated that he had built approximately 400 residences and developed more that 15 subdivisions in the Waukesha County area; he also constructed several shopping malls. Two decades later (in 1991), he estimated that he had sold more than 5,000 lots in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties.
The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
